Steven Pimlott, who has died of throat cancer aged 53, was a theatre director of unusual versatility and catholicity of taste. He once recalled that his first childhood experiences of actors were Richard III at Stratford-upon-Avon and the film of The King and I - "and in a way I've always had an equal passion for both".
